Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has faced sharp condemnation in Germany after calling for targeted killings in Gaza, including the removal of 30 to 40 Palestinians each night. The remarks were made on Monday and reported on August 21, 2026. German political figures, Jewish and Christian organisations have called for action, with demands growing for German and European Union sanctions against him.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the comments violated international law and were unacceptable. He also voiced deep concern over plans to accelerate Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank and urged Israel not to take further territory in Gaza. Merz said Israel, as an occupying power, must treat Palestinians with dignity, protect their property, and maintain public administration and humanitarian assistance in Gaza.

Deputy Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said a European-level ban was being seriously considered. Opposition politicians called for barring Ben-Gvir from Germany, while the Left Party demanded an end to all arms exports to Israel. Germany's Central Council of Jews and the Protestant Church Council also denounced the comments. Several countries, including Australia, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Norway and the Netherlands, have already imposed sanctions on Ben-Gvir.

Germany’s trade deficit with China widened to nearly €55 billion in the first half of 2026, despite China becoming Germany’s top trading partner. Preliminary data from Germany Trade & Invest, reported by Reuters, showed German exports to China fell by more than 12% from January through June to below €37 billion. China has dropped to ninth place as a market for German goods.

Chinese companies have reduced their reliance on European imports, contributing to the decline in German exports. Around 2021, China was Germany’s second-largest export market, when Germany sold €104 billion in goods there despite the effects of the pandemic. In 2026, several smaller economies, including Austria and Switzerland, bought more German goods than China.

German imports from China rose 8.9% to €91.8 billion during the period, taking total bilateral trade above €128 billion, €3 billion more than Germany’s trade with the United States. The deficit was €40 billion in the first half of last year. Germany’s manufacturing sector is also facing pressure from US tariffs and Chinese competition, with major industrial companies such as Volkswagen seeing substantial job cuts.

Germany’s rivers are seeing steadily falling water levels amid a prolonged heatwave and lack of rainfall, with new record lows reported in many locations. Public broadcaster ARD said on Wednesday that rivers in different regions had reached alarming levels and that new lows were being recorded almost daily. The Federal Institute of Hydrology said many rivers had fallen below their “low-water threshold” unusually early this year.

According to the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration, the Rhine at the Kaub gauge, between Mainz and Koblenz in southwestern Germany, fell to 24 centimetres. That was 1 centimetre below the previous record set in 2018. On Wednesday morning, Rhine water levels in the Cologne and Duisburg areas also dropped below earlier record lows, while Düsseldorf matched its 2018 record-low level.

The situation is also serious in the eastern city of Magdeburg, where the Elbe at the Magdeburg-Strombrück gauge reached its previous record low of 45 centimetres. It was expected to fall further to 40 centimetres by Friday. Forecasts indicated that rainfall shortages could drive the Rhine lower in coming days. Water-cycle and management expert Klaus Retzsch called for fundamental changes in water management to address climate-change-related water scarcity.

A higher regional court in Zweibrücken, southwestern Germany, has ruled that comparing the actions of the Israeli state with methods of Nazi rule is not automatically a criminal offence. Citing legal website Beck Online, Anadolu Agency reported that the court acquitted an Instagram user of all charges over several posts. The report was published on August 3, 2026.

The user had used Nazi swastikas and Nazi Party flags while making the comparisons. One story contained a table comparing Israel’s actions in the Middle East conflict with Nazi actions, above a split image showing the Israeli flag and a partially visible Nazi Party flag with a swastika. Another post depicted a wall with a swastika inside a Star of David, soldiers firing toward an enclosed area, and blood flowing beneath it.

The court said the offence of using symbols of unconstitutional organisations does not apply when such symbols are used to sharply criticise Israel’s conduct and the user clearly distances themselves from, or condemns, Nazi-era injustice. A lower court in Ludwigshafen had previously fined the woman 2,400 euros. The Zweibrücken court overturned that ruling on appeal and cautioned against interpreting the criminal offence too broadly in light of freedom of expression.

German court clears Instagram user over Israel-Nazi comparison posts

A higher regional court in Zweibrücken, southwestern Germany, ruled that comparing Israel’s actions with Nazi rule is not a criminal offence. According to a report published earlier this week, the court acquitted a woman over Instagram posts that compared Israeli conduct with the Nazi era and included swastikas and Nazi party flags. The ruling gave priority to her right to freedom of expression.

The woman had posted a table comparing Nazi crimes with Israel’s actions in the Middle East conflict. The image included an Israeli flag on one side and a partly visible Nazi party flag with a swastika on the other. Another post showed a mural featuring a swastika inside a Star of David, with soldiers firing from above a wall and blood flowing beneath it.

The court said the offence involving the use of symbols of unconstitutional organisations did not apply because the symbols were used while sharply criticising measures taken by the Israeli state. A lower court in Ludwigshafen had previously fined the woman 2,400 euros on the same charge. The Zweibrücken court overturned that order on appeal.

The German Football Association, or DFB, has officially appointed Jürgen Klopp as head coach of Germany’s national team. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf announced the high-profile appointment at a press conference in Frankfurt on 24 July 2026. The DFB said Klopp’s contract will take effect on 15 August and run until the summer of 2030.

The appointment follows Germany’s recent World Cup exit in the round of 32 after a defeat to Paraguay, after which the DFB dismissed coach Julian Nagelsmann. Klopp had publicly expressed interest in taking the national-team role after Nagelsmann’s departure. Since winning the 2014 World Cup, Germany exited the group stage at both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

Klopp began his coaching career at Mainz after 10 years as a player. He won two Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund and led the club to a Champions League final. At Liverpool, he won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. After leaving Liverpool in 2024 due to fatigue, Klopp had served as Red Bull’s head of global soccer since 2025.

Germany could face annual economic losses exceeding €20 billion if extreme heatwaves become a regular occurrence, according to a study by the economic research institute Prognos. The analysis, prepared for the business newspaper Handelsblatt, found that each day with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius costs Europe’s largest economy around €1 billion.

The study reported that the late-June heatwave alone caused an estimated €6.32 billion in losses. Prognos warned that if three to four similar heatwaves occur each year, the total annual damage could surpass €20 billion. The manufacturing sector is the most affected, followed by health and social services, retail, construction, and the food industry.

Researchers noted that their calculations did not include factors such as high electricity prices, equipment failures, supply chain disruptions, or long-term infrastructure damage. Including these could significantly increase the total losses. The report concluded that climate change-driven extreme weather poses growing risks to industrial economies like Germany’s.

Germany has announced that citizens from 62 countries outside the European Union and Schengen area will continue to enjoy visa-free entry in 2026, according to the German Foreign Ministry. Eligible travelers can stay in Germany for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa for purposes such as tourism, business meetings, or visiting family and friends. However, the visa-free arrangement does not permit employment during the stay.

The list of visa-exempt countries includes close partners of Germany such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and Israel. Citizens from certain visa-free countries may also apply for specific types of residence permits after arriving in Germany, in accordance with the country’s existing immigration laws.

The continuation of this policy reflects Germany’s ongoing approach to facilitating short-term travel and maintaining strong international connections with a wide range of partner nations.

Germany has reported 5,120 deaths linked to extreme heat, most of which occurred in June 2026, according to the Robert Koch Institute. The country experienced weekly average temperatures well above 20 degrees Celsius. The Copernicus Climate Change Service stated that June 2026 was the hottest month in Western Europe’s recorded history, with global temperatures reaching the second-highest level ever observed.

The European Union’s climate monitoring service attributed the abnormal heatwave to continuous warming across land and oceans, pushing the global average surface air temperature to 16.54 degrees Celsius. Western Europe’s average temperature of 20.74 degrees was three degrees higher than the 1991–2020 June average. The heatwave also caused power disruptions and school closures in several countries.

Authorities across France, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands reported over 4,700 additional deaths between June 20 and 28, while wildfires and drought intensified in Iberia and France. The World Meteorological Organization warned that greenhouse gas emissions from coal, oil, and gas combustion have raised global temperatures by about 1.4 degrees Celsius since the pre-industrial era, with further increases expected.

Germany’s Münster University has established Europe’s first independent Islamic theology faculty at a public university. The faculty will be part of the under-construction Campus of Religions, which will also house Catholic and Protestant theology departments. The campus, located in the western German city of Münster, is scheduled to open in 2027, according to a report by Deutsche Welle.

Founding dean Mohanad Khorchide described the initiative as a historic milestone and expressed gratitude for being part of it. Formerly head of the university’s Center for Islamic Theology, Khorchide said the new faculty will promote a liberal and enlightened interpretation of Islam and will be able to grant its own PhD and research degrees. The faculty’s policies emphasize compatibility between Islam and democracy, contemporary Quranic interpretation, and interfaith dialogue, while opposing extremism and antisemitism.

The university expects the number of students to exceed 500 in the coming years. A new master’s program titled “Islam and Social Work” is planned for 2027 to train professionals for youth services, hospitals, and elder care. Officials and academics have called the initiative a milestone for academic theology in Europe.

A major controversy has erupted in European football following Germany’s elimination from the World Cup. According to a report by German outlet Bild, four national team players—Leon Goretzka, Waldemar Anton, Nathaniel Brown, and Malick Thiaw—allegedly declined to take penalties during the sudden-death shootout against Paraguay. Captain Joshua Kimmich reportedly asked Goretzka twice to step up, but he refused. Defender Jonathan Tah eventually took the shot, which went over the bar, allowing José Canales to score and secure Paraguay’s 4-3 victory and a place in the round of 16.

The report notes that neither the German Football Federation, head coach Julian Nagelsmann, nor any of the players involved have issued an official statement regarding the claim. Following Germany’s third consecutive World Cup failure, questions have resurfaced about the team’s mental preparation, leadership, and ability to handle pressure.

The controversy may prompt internal reviews within German football as the federation faces scrutiny over player confidence and decision-making under high-stakes conditions.

Across Europe, rising temperatures have intensified demand for air conditioning, yet most German households still lack such systems. Data show that while nearly 90 percent of U.S. homes have air conditioning, the European average is only 20 percent, and in Germany just 6 percent of homes have central cooling. The shift is driven by climate change, with June 2026 temperatures in Europe recorded as 2 to 4 degrees Celsius higher than late 20th-century averages, sharply increasing electricity demand for cooling.

Experts attribute Germany’s slow adoption to housing design optimized for heat retention, high installation costs, and strict architectural preservation rules in historic cities. Many residents live in rented apartments where installing air conditioners requires landlord approval. High electricity prices also discourage use, with 38 percent of Europeans reporting they cannot afford adequate cooling during heatwaves.

Environmental concerns are prompting interest in sustainable alternatives such as natural ventilation, heat-resistant materials, green roofs, district cooling, and AI-powered air conditioning systems that operate up to 40 percent more efficiently. Analysts note that as summers grow hotter, northern European countries are gradually adapting to this new climate reality.

Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann has conceded that the national team is no longer among the world’s top football powers after their elimination from the 2026 World Cup. Despite a 7–1 victory over Curaçao, Germany lost to Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the round of 32 at Boston’s Foxboro Stadium, marking their third consecutive early exit from a major tournament. Nagelsmann described the defeat as deeply disappointing and acknowledged that the team’s current level does not match its historic reputation.

In the post-match press conference, Nagelsmann criticized a VAR decision that disallowed Jonathan Tah’s extra-time header, calling it “a complete joke.” He also dismissed speculation about his resignation, saying he would continue if the German Football Association (DFB) wanted him to stay. The coach emphasized that he would not walk away from the challenge despite public criticism.

Nagelsmann hinted at the need for major structural changes to restore Germany’s former strength, suggesting that significant reforms and new solutions are required for the team’s future direction.
